Prospect Spine and Pain is part of a long history of physicians dedicated to meeting their patients’ needs with the utmost compassion. It all started in 2001 when Dr. Alexander G. Salerno established Salerno Medical Associates to bring his parents’ values into the 21st century.
The following year, he initiated Senior Healthcare Outreach Program (SHOP), bringing back the house-call program his father, Dr. Alphonse Salerno, first established. SHOP eventually became Community Healthcare Outreach Program (CHOP Health) to expand services to those with mental health struggles. In 2010, Dr. Salerno launched the Urban Healthcare Initiative Program (UHIP) to help rectify disparities in healthcare outcomes primarily affecting people in urban communities.
To broaden primary care services, Dr. Salerno established Metropolitan Medical Group in 2014. The next year, he joined his father-in-law, Dr. Raouf Elias, at Roseville Medical Society in Newark, NJ, to aid him in caring for patients. When Dr. Elias passed in 2016, Dr. Salerno and a team of physicians carried on his legacy and continued serving this population.
North Ward Medical Arts opened in 2021, fulfilling the wish of Dr. Salerno’s mother, Dr. Svetlana Salerno, to return to her original office in Newark, NJ. This location provides services traditionally underrepresented in the region. The same year saw the establishment of Prospect Spine and Pain and two other specialty locations providing vital care to Essex County — Newark Vein and Vascular Center and North Ward Behavioral Health Center.
