What Is the Vascular System?

Also known as the circulatory system, the vascular system is the network of blood vessels that carry blood throughout the body. The vascular system is comprised of arteries and veins: arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body, and veins carry blood cells back to the heart. Proper circulation also helps the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems function.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Vascular Conditions

Some vascular system conditions are common, like varicose and spider veins. Others can be quite serious, like atherosclerosis, blood clots, and peripheral vascular disease. The vascular doctors at Nirvana Healthcare Management Services take a preventative approach to care, identifying risk factors that can be modified and addressed to improve patient outcomes. Patients can receive diagnosis and treatment for:

Blood Clots

A clot occurs when blood cells get stuck together and don’t break down in the way they are supposed to. Blood clots can form in the arms and legs, as well as in the brain or heart. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that typically forms in the lower leg or thigh. If a DVT breaks off and travels through the bloodstream, it can lead to a pulmonary embolism.

Blood clots can be diagnosed with imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, and with blood work like a D-dimer test. Treatment can include taking blood thinners or medications to help dissolve clots or even a surgical procedure to remove the clot.

Spider Veins

Spider veins, also known as thread veins, are visible clusters of damaged blood vessels. They may look purple, red, or blue, and are generally smaller and less noticeable than varicose veins. Spider veins can typically be diagnosed with a physical exam, and may be treated with an outpatient procedure called sclerotherapy which injects a solution into the affected veins that cause them to fade over time. Cutera Laser treatment can also treat spider and reticular veins while tightening and rejuvenating the patient’s skin.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are twisted, bulging veins that often appear dark blue or purple. While they’re not always harmful, they may make a patient feel self-conscious. Varicose veins can be an indication of underlying issues with the vascular system, like venous insufficiency. They can be diagnosed with a venous ultrasound and treated with compression stockings, laser treatments, and sclerotherapy, as well as lifestyle modifications like regular exercise.

Vein Insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a type of disease that occurs when the veins in a patient’s legs are damaged. Normally, valves in the leg veins direct blood toward the heart. But when vein walls and valves are damaged and weakened, the veins can’t push the blood in the correct direction. Blood can collect or pool in the legs, especially when a person is standing or sitting for a long time.

CVI is often the cause of tired, aching, swollen legs and can cause issues like varicose veins. Vein insufficiency is often misdiagnosed as arthritis or heart failure in older patients. The condition can also occur in women who have had one or more pregnancies, which puts extra pressure on the legs and feet. CVI can be diagnosed with a physical exam and ultrasound. Treatment can include lifestyle modifications like weight management and wearing compression stockings, as well as minimally invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy for large veins.

While the primary care providers of Nirvana Healthcare Management Services can diagnose and offer preventive care for vascular conditions, some patients will be referred to Newark Vein and Vascular Center for targeted treatments such as sclerotherapy and endovenous laser treatment.
